While Smores and Hotdogs are undeniable campfire classics, variety truly is the spice of life. Venture off the beaten path during your next cottage stay and try out some of these new and delicious campfire recipes!

1. Foil Hash Browns

Who said that hash browns were just for breakfast or that campfires were just for night-time? Enjoy this tasty campfire meal any time of the day. Simply grab some foil and fill the middle with any type of thawed small cubed potatoes. Season with salt and pepper and add your desire toppings – cheese, bacon, peppers, onions, etc. Wrap the foil so that everything is encased and place on a cooking rack above the fire for 6-8 minutes on each side. Unwrap and enjoy!

2. Baked Banana Boats

If you’re looking for a healthier dessert alternative, this is the perfect recipe for you. Slice a banana lengthwise down the middle, deep enough to fit all your desired toppings. Gently pull each side of the banana to form a pocket in the middle. Place the banana on a piece of foil and wrap the foil so it is molded tight around the banana, leaving the side with the pocket uncovered. Fill the pocket with your favourite toppings – marshmallows, chocolate chips, graham crackers and peanut butter are some fan favourites. Place foil wrapped bananas over a campfire rack for 4-5 minutes.

3. Campfire Crescents

This recipe only requires 3 staple ingredients, making it both easy and cost effective. Get a roll of premade crescent roll dough, Pillsbury works great. Find a study but long stick, the same type you would use for marshmallow roasted. Clean off your stick that grab a section of your crescent roll dough. Wrap the dough around the stick and roast on the fire until golden brown on the outside. Eat plain or wrap around a hotdog, add toppings like butter, cream cheese, jam or sausage.

4. Cinnamon Sugar Apples

This recipe is essentially apple pie on a stick. Grab your favourite type of apple and skewer it, then prepare a mixture of cinnamon and sugar in a bowl and keep it on hand. Roast the apple above the fire, turning frequently, until the skin is browned. Once browned remove the apple from the heat and let it cool until you are able to safely touch it. Proceed to peel the skin from the apple and roll it in the cinnamon sugar. Eat and enjoy!

5. Foil Fish

Grab your favourite type of fish from the local grocery store, or from the local lake if you’re a fishing enthusiast. Season the fish with salt and pepper and place it in some foil, on its own or with whatever accoutrements you desire – lemon slices and fresh herbs are always a good choice. Wrap the foil so the fish is securely encased and place on a campfire rack until fish is cooked to perfection.

Before you start your campfire, you should take a look at the rules for burning and the town’s current fire rating. If there is a fire pit at this cottage and you want to use it, call toll-free 1-877-847-1577 for daily fire danger ratings.
